Actress
and Producer Deborah Raffin to Champion UCPREF
Deborah
Raffin portrays Lena Canada, a therapist in charge of Diane Lane. A wheelchair-based
girl with cerebral palsy, Lane also
shows signs of autism. Determined to bring Lane back into the world,
Ms. Canada suggests that the girl start a pen-pal relationship with
her favorite celebrity--Elvis Presley. Based on the real Lena
Canada's book "To Elvis With Love," the low-key but emotionally
supercharged Touched By Love costars Michael Learned as Lena's
superior, Dr. Bell; also in the cast are sixteen genuine "special"
children from a school in Calgary, Alberta.
For fifteen years,
Deborah Raffin was involved in the operations of Dove Entertainment,
Inc., a company which she co-founded. The largest independent
producer of audio books in the world, Deborah was co-executive
producer for a library of sixteen hundred titles. Deborah has also
line-produced over four hundred audio books, the majority of which
have been from titles on the New York Times Bestseller’s List,
making her the most successful producer in the audio book industry.
She has worked with writers including Amy Tan, Sidney Sheldon and
LaVyrle Spencer, along with readers including Paul Scofield, Ben
Kingsley, Robin Williams, Whoopie Goldberg, Sharon Stone, and Tom
Cruise. Twelve audio books produced by Deborah have been nominated
for Grammy Awards. She received two Grammy Awards, one for Enchanted Tales, read by the late Audrey Hepburn and Rush
Limbaugh is a Big Fat Idiot and Other Observations, written and
read by Al Franken. As president of Dove Kids, Deborah received
eleven Parent’s Choice Awards for children’s audio books and 12
Grammy nominations.
Ms. Raffin’s two
hardback books entitled Sharing Christmas and A Gift of
Sharing recall the memories and feelings of the Christmas
holiday from such celebrated people as Art Buchwald, President Ford,
Oliver Stone and Margaret Thatcher. All profits from the books aid
the homeless in America.
Deborah made her
television directorial debut with CBS’s two-hour movie, Family
Blessings, based upon the best-selling novel by LaVyrle Spencer.
As a film/miniseries producer, Ms. Raffin has line-produced four
projects and most recently, the number one rated, two-hour movie, Unwed Father, starring Brian Austin Green. As a theatrical
producer, she co-executive produced the highly acclaimed feature
film “Wilde” starring Stephen Fry, Jude Law, and Vanessa Redgrave:
distributed by Sony Pictures Classics.
For the past ten
years, Ms. Raffin has been portraying Aunt Julie on the acclaimed
series 7th HEAVEN, on the WB Network, and has recently
directed two 7th HEAVEN episodes. She recently starred
in the PAX television film BOOK OF DAYS.
Ms. Raffin has
served on the Scott Newman Foundation Board for 15 years, two years
on the NARAS (National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences)
board, and five years on the Children Institute’s International
